The oceanic activities provide scientific support for new tuna management initiatives adopted by P-ACPs at a critical time for conservation of the stocks, in particular, intensive observer training and enhancement of national fishing activity databases. The coastal activities are focused on projects combining an urgent resource management issue with a strong local capability to address the issue and maintain a long-term programme.

Identification cards for marine invertebrate surveys in the Pacific Islands

invertebrateidcards

This new series of 16 identification cards present the main species of bivalves, crustaceans, echinoderms and gastropods present in Pacific island waters, as well as the most common methods used to measure them. Four cards are added to present the main species of algae and seagrass, and a few typical habitats. The A4 cards will be printed on plastic to be usable in the field and under water. They will also be part of "Assessing tropical marine invertebrates: a Manual for Pacific Island resource managers", a publication that will soon be released.

Coastal fisheries in the Pacific ‘a mixed report’

artisanalA new report on the status of reef and near-shore fisheries of Pacific Islands has delivered a mixed verdict about their health.

It says some fisheries are under strain and some have been fished to the brink of local extinction, and it states that management action needs to be strengthened to protect this valuable resource.

The report, issued by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), looks at four main areas: reef fisheries, nearshore fisheries, aquaculture and the roles of men and women in fishing occupations.

Competition between local & industrial fishers hots up in Pacific

purseseinerjpg

Increased competition for tuna is causing tension between local fishers and industrial vessels in some Pacific Islands, and the Heads of Pacific Island Fisheries Departments have tasked the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) to examine the issue.

The problem occurs when industrial vessels compete with small-scale local fisheries (‘artisanal fisheries’) for the same fish, in the same area and during the same season. It is worse in areas where the industrial catch is large.

Two leaflets promoting careers in fisheries

brochureYoung people in Pacific island countries now have access to two leaflets on careers in the fisheries sector. Through them they can learn that you have to have a taste for adventure to be an on-board observer, that you should have a degree in fisheries sciences if you want to work with local communities on managing their marine resources, or even, that today many women hold positions of responsibility in the tuna industry.

These publications are designed to encourage young people to work in fisheries by providing them with adequate information on the various professions and their requirements, while describing the educational requirements.
