 The DevFish2 project overall objective is to increase the contribution from the sustainable use of highly migratory marine resources, particularly tuna, to the alleviation of poverty in Pacific states. It promotes the establishment of a more favourable policy environment for tuna industry development in Pacific countries, including the small scale component. It will provide direct assistance to small and medium enterprises in the sector as well as artisanal fishers and also build a region-wide IUU deterrence strategy, utilising the results of initial monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) studies in building robust and cost-effective regional capabilities to combat IUU fishing. EU monitoring and evaluation mission passes DevFish2 with five A’s
 An independent monitoring and evaluation mission was commissioned by EU undertook a review of the EU funded DevFish2 project in November 2012.
The monitoring and evaluation mission graded the DevFish2 project with five straight A’s across the five criteria of scoring.
EU funded projects are usually subject to external results oriented monitoring (ROM) during the duration of project term. The ROM mission for the DevFish2 project assessed and evaluated the project’s performance in its services and support delivery to target beneficiary stakeholders and also project administration and coordination.

Nearshore FAD support to Atauro Island, Timor Leste
 In July 2013, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) provided technical support in rigging and deploying three artisanal nearshore fish aggregating devices (FADs) or ‘rumpon’ at three sites along the east coast of Atauro Island in Timor Leste. Atauro Island is 22 nautical miles north of Dili and has a population of about 10,000 people, mostly artisanal fishers and subsistence farmers.

Industrial training in fish processing for food technology students
 Seven third-year food technology students have the opportunity to work in local fish processing operations in Lae and Madang and with the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) as part of their training. The EU-funded SPC/DevFish2 project collaborated with the PNG University of Technology ‘s (UNITECH) Department of Applied Science to facilitate the industrial training attachments for the students.

SPC/DevFish2 project provides sea-safety grab-bags for Papua New Guinea fishers
 Thirty small-craft sea-safety grab-bags were presented to the Papua New Guinea (PNG) National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) by the SPC/DevFish2 project. The EU-funded project focuses on assisting with small-scale fisheries development and acknowledges that safety at sea for small-scale artisanal fishers is a critical priority, especially for the 15 maritime provinces in the country.
